Pin Dynamics SL to the Taskbar

Dynamics SL typically runs from a mapped network drive. When it does the “Pin to Taskbar” option does not appear when you right-click. This article explains how to pin it. The name of the .exe to copy locally and make a shortcut to in order to pin to the taskbar is MSDynamicsSL.exe, found in the Applications directory on the mapped network drive.

VS Online “We detected something unusual…”

I needed to use Visual Studio Online (VSO) from a remote site where I connected via a VPN and Remote Desktop. I have multi-factor authentication enabled on my Microsoft account. I saw a message stating “We detected something unusual and need to verify your account. Where should we send the code?” I enter the last four digits of my phone number and the wizard took me to the next page. I received the code via SMS and entered it on... Continue reading →

A Year At SteadyCode

A year ago this week I made the decision to found SteadyCode. It’s been a fantastic journey, in many ways! I could never have guessed where my decision would lead. I was able to travel to the other side of the world and back a couple of times. I began thinking in ways I never had before as an employee. I’ve made new friends and business associates. I stopped blogging for a while because I was focused on things I... Continue reading →

Lightswitch 2013 (Incompatible)

I created a Visual Studio 2013 Lightswitch Desktop solution. I copied it from one machine to another and it worked fine on both, but another developer could not open it on his machine. To the right of each project in the solution appeared “(Incompatible)”. We created a new Lightswitch project using VS2013 on his computer. No problem. It opened fine. Looking at the project files with a text editor we noticed that the LightswitchVersion XML element was 4.0, where the... Continue reading →

Connecting to Windows Azure Active Directory

I’ve used Office 365 for several years and recently wanted to reach Windows Azure Active Directory. How to do that was not obvious, but a video on MSDN Channel 9 opened my eyes. After watching this and reading the comments, I logged in to https://activedirectory.windowsazure.com with my “.onmicrosoft.com” Microsoft account (formerly Live ID). In order to reach the web site using my Organization account I logged into Office 365 first, then browsed to it. Both accounts are administrators. The Channel... Continue reading →

Adding the Dynamics SL CodeInspector to VS2013

If you install Visual Studio 2010 before installing the Dynamics SL 2011 client, the SL client install copies the CodeInspector.Addin file from its default location of C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\microsoft shared\DynamicsSL to My Documents\Visual Studio 2010\Addins and changes the Version XML element from 8.0 to 10.0. If you install Visual Studio 2013 and want to use the CodeInspector, you’ll need to copy this file to My Documents\Visual Studio\Addins (creating the Addins folder if Visual Studio hasn’t already created it). You... Continue reading →

In Praise of Microsoft Virtual Academy

A few weeks ago I ran across Microsoft Virtual Academy. I’m still on my first course, but I’m really impressed. They film experts going through a wide variety of their products in-depth, and it’s all free. The course I’m taking is comprehensive and well presented by a ten-year MVP in the area, Andy Wigley, who became a Microsoft employee shortly before filming the course. Every session includes PDFs of their PowerPoint slides for review and there are links to supplementary materials to go... Continue reading →

Windows Phone 8 Emulator Processors

When launching the Windows Phone Emulator for debugging, I got the message “The Windows Phone Emulator wasn’t able to set some properties on the virtual machine. Couldn’t change Memory of the virtual machine”. I got this both on a Windows 8 machine (non-virtualized) and on Parallels on a Mac. It took a while to find a solution for Parallels. I had followed all the instructions they provided here. The emulator would start, display the error message, and close as soon... Continue reading →

Salesforce1 on Windows Phone

Salesforce1 has an HTML5 version you can use on the Windows Phone, Blackberry, etc. Log into your Salesforce org and append “/one/one.app”. Once you’ve logged in you can “Pin to Start”. It works with all editions of Salesforce. Nathan Lipke shared this tip at the Denver Salesforce Developer meetup last night.

The Key to Success?

Today I ran across an inspiring six-minute TED talk by psychologist Angela Lee Duckworth on the key to success. It isn’t talent or IQ. In my last post I called it persistence and determination, moving doggedly ahead. She calls it grit. Take a look.
