Connecting to GitHub with Visual Studio 2013

When developing for older versions of Dynamics SL, I sometimes use Visual Studio 2013 with the Microsoft GitHub integration. Since GitHub started to require TLS 1.2 in Feb., 2018, sync attempts can return the message, “An error occurred. Detailed message: An error occurred while sending the request.” I was able to easily resolve this on Windows Server 2012 by following the instructions in this post. I opened an elevated command prompt and ran the commands that affect all .Net operations.... Continue reading →

December, 2017, Dynamics SL Web App Tips

It’s been a busy year, and a long time since I blogged. Here’s one for a fairly small audience. 😉 When installing the December, 2017, hotfix for the Dynamics SL Web Apps I saw the message: “There was an issue registering the CRUFLADG.DLL. Attempt to register the file manually using regasm.exe from the Framework 64 folder.” The message is misleading. It’s is a 32 bit assembly. Use the 32 bit version of regasm.exe to register it. Launch a command prompt... Continue reading →

A Favorite Quote

This morning I read an article in the Australian Financial Review with a quote from Satya Nadella, Microsoft’s CEO, that I wanted to remember. It struck a chord with me. “We had to go from being know-it-alls to learn-it-alls, that has been important to me,” Nadella says. “This is not about new dogma, it is about being able to give team members breathing space to be able to bring their A-game, to be able to be vulnerable and not have... Microsoft Dynamics ‘Tenerife’ Developer Preview

Today the Microsoft Dynamics NAV development team introduced new tools to build extensions and apps. In the post, they encouraged people to use the tag #dyndev365. MSDynamicsWorld wrote that a primary use will be to develop new NAV and Dynamics 365 for Financials extensions. The preview is named the “Microsoft Dynamics NAV ‘Tenerife’ Developer Preview“. The pre-release name for Dynamics 365 for Financials was Madeira, while Tenerife is the largest of the nearby Canary Islands. It seems obvious that these... Continue reading →

FireFox Zero Day Vulnerability Warning

Update: Firefox has issued a new version, 50.0.2, that corrects this issue. Wordfence, a security site focused on WordPress.org sites, has published an emergency bulletin recommending a temporary switch to Chrome, Safari, or other non-Firefox based browser that is secure until the Firefox dev team can release an update. There is a “day zero vulnerability” that allows an attacker to control Windows systems with a high success rate affecting Firefox versions 41 to 50.  SecurityWeek reports that the vulnerability can also affect... Customization in Dynamics 365, Business Edition

I’m excited about Microsoft Dynamics 365, which officially launched on Nov. 1, 2016. Right now the Business Edition (BE) is an amazing alternative to QuickBooks Online! One thing that was lacking  in BE when it launched was a customization story. There’s an integration story to other systems, but it’s not possible to modify existing pages. Since ERP/CRM customization is a core focus at SteadyCode, I’m keeping an eye on that. Here’s a LinkedIn article on precisely that by Marco Perisic, General... Continue reading →

Dynamics SL Custom Table Permissions for PV Lookups

I created a PV Lookup (showing Possible Values) for a custom table for a Microsoft Dynamics SL 2015, CU 1, SDK application. Immediately after pressing F3 I got a TargetInvocationException in Visual Studio. The Visual Studio Output window listed an unhandled exception in the Microsoft.Dynamics.SL.Controls assembly at SetSqlDataSource. Digging into the Call Stack showed the exception came from the CTLBPVSql method in the swimapi.dll. A SQL Trace showed a statement that ran correctly using my credentials, but Dynamics SL runs it as the... Continue reading →

Setting the DSLMaskedText Mask with SetProps

If you’re still reading, you’re probably a Dynamics SL programmer, scratching your head. I had a requirement today that I guess I’ve never had before: set the Mask property dynamically at runtime based on values in a definition table. The table contained the mask character and length. Of course, you need to use the SL SDK method SetProps. I created the string with the new mask, in this case “UUUUU” (five characters long). The original mask had 15 characters. According to the... Error after Upgrading a Customized Instance of Acumatica

After an upgrade to an instance of Acumatica customized by three different companies, I saw the following error message when I went to update a customization. “Some files has been modified manually by the user on the file system.” [sic]. The files were actually modified by the upgrade, not by the user, so the message is a bit misleading. I resolved this issue by clicking Unpublish All. After that process finished and customizations were unpublished, I published again and did... Continue reading →

Failing to Update WordPress Plugins can Topple World Leaders

I was amazed to read this week an analysis from Wordfence that the Panama Papers hack, the largest data breach to journalists in history, may have been caused by the failure to update a WordPress plugin. The plugin in question had still not been updated as of their original post. The papers implicated high officials in several world governments and led directly to the resignation of Iceland’s Prime Minister. Security isn’t just about firewalls, backups, and careful coding. Failure to perform... Continue reading →
